Native Habitat Managementpremerchstand.gifpremerchstand.gif

Native habitat management is often the most overlooked aspect of wildlife management plans.  At Soterra it is one of our primary focuses due to the importance of natural vegetation in a deer’s diet.  As browsers, deer target the most nutritious species available to eat, which in turn can degrade the natural habitat.  By understanding this we can tailor management strategies of pine stands, clear-cuts, fallow fields and hardwood sites to increase the production of highly nutritious plant species.  By enhancing the native habitat, deer readily have high quality food on which to forage in addition to other supplemental food sources.  Since wildlife species spend most of their time in their native habitats, this forage will make up a large component of their diet.  Upland game species, such as turkey, quail and dove, as well as songbirds benefit from this type management.
